WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FROM BUILDING GREEN?
"Green Features" are typically healthier, cleaner, quieter, safer and more comfortable. Some of these features may also translate to a higher return on investment for the homeowner.
These days, it seems like everyone's talking about green building, and for good reason. Environmentally friendly homes not only save resources and money; they last longer, are healthier and more comfortable.
Product Quality:
Green building will increase home durability in that the products used are comprised of longer-lived materials that reduce the impact on resources required for replacement. Reduction in maintenance and repair costs for the homeowner will be a direct benefit from using products that are more durable and longer lasting.
In a well-thought-out building design, however, substituting green products for conventional products can make the difference between a good building and a great one; at J. Harris we will take advantage of any and all of these opportunities so that the product we deliver is the best.
Increased Value:
98% of consumers feel that energy efficiency is important when choosing where they will live. Recognized efficiency standards have already shown to provide a higher resale value. These home values will continue to increase as green building and its benefits are realized throughout the industry and with the consumer.
A common attitude with the consumer is that green building is more expensive. This is not necessarily true because by reducing energy use, lowering water use, using fewer materials and improving durability the home's affordability is actually increased in the long run and will play an important role in a positive resale value.
Economic Benefits:
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reports that on average green built homes "use 30% less energy than conventionally built homes. Homeowners enjoy the savings gained from lower utility and water bills. Green building, at any level, typically adheres to energy efficiency standards that are above code levels normally required.
Thanks to a growing consciousness among consumers and manufacturers of how building techniques and materials impact all of us, the cost of many of these products has come down, making green building not only smart, but cost effective as well.
Health Benefits:
It has long been acknowledged that the air inside a building can be worse, than the air outside. This is due in part to gasses, primarily formaldehyde, that are emitted from certain building materials after they are installed in the building. Certain floor coverings, particle board, insulation and other materials that utilize formaldehyde in their makeup can all contribute to this problem, and green building practices make extensive use of products that do not contain formaldehyde. The health benefits from utilizing these products and practices of better insulation, air sealing, lighting and others are beneficial to everyone. Buildings should be healthy to live or work in and around; and the indoor air quality can be enhanced by astute product selection and how they are installed and used.
Personal Satisfaction:
Green building is: GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE- GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT- GOOD FOR THE FUTURE. It doesn't matter what level of involvement a homeowner or home builder takes; we can all feel good about doing our part to make this world a better place to live. We all have an environmental conscience and want to DO THE RIGHT THING.....SO......REDUCE.....REUSE....RECYCLE
